Dr. Philip Gordon was nominated Assistant Secretary to the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs on March 6, 2009. From 1999 to 2009, he was Senior Fellow for US Policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, where he focused on a wide range of European and US foreign policy issues. Prior to joining Brookings, he was Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton. He has held other teaching and research posts at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London; the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC; INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, and Singapore; and the German Society for Foreign Affairs in Bonn. Dr. Gordon has a PhD and an MA in European Studies and International Economics from John Hopkins University (SAIS) and a BA in French and Philosophy from Ohio University. His working languages include French, German, Italian and some Spanish. He has published a number of books and articles on international relations and foreign policy, including 2007’s Winning the Right War: The Path to Security for America and the World, and has been a frequent contributor to the op-ed pages of major publications.
